FIRST.... Are you
SURE you really really really want an Old English Sheepdog?
Yes, they are a really neat dog, and you will get lots of stares,
and stops and looks. But they are not the dog for everyone! They
are a LOT of work and are not the dog for everyone. They are hairy
and can have wet drippy mouths after drinking water!
I highly discourage parents with new or young children, only
because of the time involved. One Old English Sheepdog is like
having 3 toddlers. You must watch them constantly and that means a
lot of TIME. The grooming alone is time consuming.
If you acquire an OES from Gwynedd OES, chances are they are not a
show dog, or are a retired showdog. This This gives you the option
of keeping them in full coat, which requires a lot of brushing to
keep them clean and in coat, or to trimming them into a puppy coat
which is much more manageable and probably enjoyable for you and
the dog.
Once you have decided you really want an OES, it's time to submit
an application.
AT Gwynedd OES, when I place an Old English Sheepdog in a home
there are a lot of factors to be considered. Our main goal is to
get a good match for the OES and the home. For example, if we have
a dog that does not enjoy cats or is an Alpha dog, we would not
consider any home with cats for that particular dog, or we would
make sure that is a home where the dog would be an only dog.
Once we are in contact from your application, we will contact you
with a lot of questions. We want to make sure you and the dog are
the correct "match" for each other. We are very upfront and will
tell you if we don't think it would be a good 'match'. We would
rather have our dog placed in a correct home the first time, than
to have her 'bounce' back two or three times or end up in a RESCUE
program due to not having all of the facts from you in the
beginning!
We will be checking in on you quite often. Probably two or three
times the first week, then less often as the next weeks and months
go by.
We require you to keep in touch with us at least twice yearly and
send photo's at least once a year. Our contract that you sign says
that at any time in the future that you can no longer have the
dog, he is to be returned to us, he is not to go to any Shelter or
Old English Sheepdog RESCUE program, or ANY rescue program for
that matter! We want to avoid this scenario and we DO take this
part of the contract very seriously. We believe that what we have
brought into this world, we take care of on our own and will see
to them ourselves. If ANY problems arise you are to contact
GWYNEDD Old English Sheepdogs and we will work out the problems
together, this is also in the contract you sign.
We will probably meet and you and the dog may get to know each
other. Chances are you 'might' end up taking the dog home with you
that day. But chances are I will ask you to meet the dog, let us
meet and get to know you better and see how you interact with each
other. I will then ask you to go home and think about it
seriously. Not every dog is for every family.
You will also need to take into consideration the following. You
will need a crate in the car for your dog to go home with you from
our house along with a Leash and water. We will send home with you
a toy and a blanket as well, as they have 'scent' on them to help
give them some feeling of security.
After you have read this, and thought about it and still want to
adopt an OES from GWYNEDD, please feel free to click on the
adoption form.
I will also tell you know. I don't breed that often. I don't take
"order's" for future OES and they are not a 'shelf' commodity
where you can request "Oh, I want one with a white head and two
blue eyes, or One left gray ear or whatever". If that is what you
are looking for, Gwynedd Old English Sheepdogs are not for you. |
